★★★ Olive + Gourmando VIEUX-MONTREAL BAKERY/LIGHT FAREEminently appealing, Olive + Gourmando is a local favorite. Croissants, scones, and biscuits sit side by side with creative sandwiches and plates, from a grilled cheese with Gouda and caramelized onions to homemade vegan burgers. The owners have opened two notable ventures in recent years: Un Po’ Di Più, an Italian-style aperitivo bar with drinks and refined small plates as well as coffee and pastries, right on the main drag of the Old Port (www.caffeunpodipiu.com; 3 rue de la Commune est), and the restaurant Foxy, in the Griffintown neighborhood just west of Vieux-Montréal (www.foxy.restaurant; 1638 rue Notre-Dame ouest). 351 rue St-Paul ouest. www.oliveetgourmando.com. ☎ 514/350-1083. Most items under C$16. Breakfast and lunch until 5pm weekdays and 6pm weekends. Métro: Square-Victoria. Map p 101.

Bargain Hunters: Look for the Table d’Hôte

Always consider the table d’hôte fixed-price meals at restaurants. Ubiquitous in Montréal, they comprise a meal of two or four courses, usually priced at just a little more than the cost of a single a la carte main course. Restaurants at all price ranges offer them, and they represent the best value around. They’re cheaper still at lunch—an economical way to sample top establishments.
